Architects and real estate developers find relevance in economic development

Added on 5th May 2014
Architecture and real estate play an important role in economic development, the Nigerian Institute of Architects has said.

According to the NIA, this makes it imperative for investors in emerging settlements to be fully equipped with the knowledge base necessary to deliver habitable and sustainable assets.

The institute said the quest for knowledge in the built environment would form the basis of the fifth edition of the Lagos Architects??? Forum tagged: Lagos 5.0 ??? Architecture and Real Estate Development, organised by the Lagos Chapter of the NIA.

The Chairman of the chapter, Mr. Ladi Lewis, said the theme was targeted at the engine of growth of the economy of Lagos State.

He said, ???Without architecture and real estate, we will not have the structures around us that we live and work in, and which we require for existence in an urban environment. Without it, we will not have schools, hospitals, residential buildings, shopping malls and so on. This topic deals with the totality of our existence in Lagos State and we believe that this is what is going to generate the development in the state to improve the economy.

???When we develop buildings, we provide jobs and are able to provide a better living environment for everyone; we have opportunities in Lagos because the state has the clients and the population and we need to satisfy them with adequate housing.

???But we also need to create an environment that is conducive for foreign investment and we cannot do this without architecture and real estate investment.???

According to him, building construction is a complex process involving professionals with years of training and people must learn to engage those who have gone through the process of training and evaluation for their projects in order to reduce the incidences of failed buildings.

???We the professionals are coming to say that we need to build with registered professionals; people engage quacks and non-professionals that is why they have issues,??? Lewis said.

The Public Relations Officer, NIA, Lagos chapter, Mr. Samsom Akinyosoye, said the deliberations of the three-day event, starting from May 14, would be summarised in a communiqu?? that would give direction to people engaged in the business of shaping the next urban space and regulators of the development process.

???We now live in a universal community where the interplay between physical development and economics has become very strong. In the present and contemporary global world, architecture, urban planning and design as well as landscape architecture must confront the complex mechanisms of development, finance and economics,??? he said.

Lewis said the forum would also create an opportunity to focus on the incursion of foreigners into the built environment in the country.
